How to Migrate your Bookmarks

Bookmarks are a great way to keep all of our essential websites handy. We often do not realize how useful they are until they are gone. For example, when we get new devices, they are set to factory settings and will not have those bookmarks we rely on so heavily. 

This article will walk you through the methods of moving your bookmarks from one browser to another or one computer to another, focusing on browsers Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and Edge.  

 

Note: A finely curated list of bookmarks can make our browsing experience tremendously easier by granting quick access to our daily websites and services


Import/Export Bookmarks 

To Export on Safari:

In the menubar, located along the top of the screen, select File > Export > Bookmarks and save to Downloads. 

 

To Import on Safari:

In the taskbar, select File > Import From > Bookmarks HTML File and select the HTML file of bookmarks (e.g. file saved to downloads when exporting bookmarks) that you’d like to migrate into Safari. 

  

To Export on Firefox:

Select the hamburger menu (three stacked lines) located in the top right of the browser, Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks you will then be prompted with the bookmark library, select the pair of arrows icon located in the top left of Bookmark Library referenced below:



 


Finally select Export Bookmarks to HTML and save them to your Downloads.

 

To Import on Firefox:

In the hamburger menu, select Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Select the pair of arrows icon > Import Bookmarks from HTML.

  

To Export on Chrome:

Select the 'more' dots (three-dotted ribbon) in the top right corner of your browser, select Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager. You will then be navigated to the Bookmark manager, locate the three-dotted ribbon in the right corner below the one you selected in the previous step, Select the ribbon > Export bookmarks > Save to Downloads.


To Import on Chrome:

Select the three-dotted ribbon in the top right corner of your browser, select Bookmarks > Bookmark Managerlocate the three-dotted ribbon in the right corner below the one you selected in the previous step, Select the ribbon > Import bookmarks > Select saved HTML bookmark file. 


To Export on Edge: (On Edge, bookmarks are referred to as 'Favorites')

Select the star located to the right of the address bar (appears as a shooting star), you are now in the favorites menu, select the three-dotted ribbon (beneath shooting star) > Export Favorites > Save to Downloads.


To Import on Edge:

Select the star located to the right of the address bar (appears as a shooting star), you are now in the favorites menu > select the three-dotted ribbon (beneath shooting star) > Import Favorites > You are now prompted with the 'Import browser data' menu > Select which browser data you want imported.
